Energy Ratings
What is the 5 Star Rating?
The 5 Star Energy Rating was introduced by the Victorian government to help reduce the impact of energy consumption from housing. From July 2004 it is compulsory for all new Victorian homes to achieve a 5 star rating. This does not apply to extensions or alterations to existing homes. However existing homes can take advantage of applying energy efficient design features to help you save money on heating and cooling costs, as well as making your home environmentally friendly.
The Energy Rating of a dwelling is the overall energy efficiency of the house. The rating depends on combined combination of the heat loss or gain of various elements of the house. These elements include house orientation, building materials, insulation, window shading, glazing and water saving fixtures.
There are a number of ways a house can achieve a 5 Star Rating and the rating itself is flexible enough to accommodate different architectural designs and ERC can help you with our consultancy service.
What are the benefits?
A 5 Star home not only helps the consumer, it also helps the environment. 5 Star homes not only provide high quality and comfortable places to live with low running costs but it they also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce energy consumption.
A 5 Star home benefits from energy efficiency and can be up to 5 degrees warmer in Winter and up to 10 degrees cooler in Summer depending on construction and design.
